Proje Özeti

The aim of this paper is to analyse the impact of Brexit on the Anglo-Turkish Relations. Following two ground-breaking events within less than a month in June-July 2016, the Brexit referendum in the UK on 23rd June and the failed coup attempt in Turkey on 15th July, both of the countries had to revise their foreign policy. Despite the criticism that Turkey’s government is moving towards an authoritarian path with the post-coup attempt purge in academia and media, the May government decided to approach Erdogan administration for a further collaboration on trade and security issues and a £100 million worth fighter jet deal was approved shortly after Boris Johnson stated that he wishes to establish a ‘jumbo’ free trade agreement between Turkey and the UK. This rapprochement was welcomed in Turkey. The eagerness to establish new trade and security links by both the British and the Turkish governments indicates that following the failure of both governments’ relationships with the EU, both countries need a new alliance, especially on the trade and security. This new trade-security nexus manifests itself on the Syrian Civil War, the Refugee Crisis, and both countries’ failed relationships with the EU on the one hand, and on the other it is based on the domestic politics of both countries. Therefore, it is safe to argue that, this new trade-security nexus a transcendental form of the relationality between the national, the regional, and the global.
