Özet

The integration of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) into Turkish landscape architecture constitutes a multidisciplinary synthesis that harmonizes millennia-old ethnobotanical traditions with contemporary demands for ecological sustainability, cultural heritage preservation, and urban health enhancement. Anatolia's exceptional floristic richness—exceeding 12,000 vascular plant taxa, with approximately one-third endemic—positions the region as a global biodiversity hotspot and a living repository of therapeutic, symbolic, and sensory knowledge inherited from Hittite, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman civilizations. This volume elucidates how MAPs transcend mere ornamentation to function as multifunctional agents in garden design, therapeutic landscapes, sensory environments, and resilient urban green infrastructure. Drawing on recent ethnobotanical documentation, trade statistics, and empirical studies demonstrating well-being improvements (e.g., 25–40% enhancements in visitor perceptions and mood), xeriscaping reductions in irrigation (up to 50%), and economic contributions via essential oils and exports, the work advocates for evidence-based, community-oriented strategies that bridge historical motifs—such as rose for spiritual devotion and lavender for purification—with innovative applications in therapy gardens, scent maps, and symbolic cultural parks. Ultimately, this interdisciplinary framework underscores MAPs as vital bridges from tradition to modernity, offering scalable solutions for climate-resilient, culturally resonant, and health-promoting landscapes amid accelerating urbanization and environmental pressures in Turkey.
