Dark patterns are design strategies commonly employed in user interface designs on digital platforms with the aim of manipulating users’ rational decision-making processes. Although they have been extensively studied in the international literature, dark patterns are represented by only a limited number of studies in Turkish academic writing. Conceptual review studies are therefore needed to establish and develop this concept on solid theoretical foundations. Within this context, dark patterns are examined at a conceptual level and explained through the lenses of behavioral models, cognitive biases, persuasive design, and persuasive technologies. This study demonstrates that dark patterns constitute not merely simple design tactics, but rather a systematic, covert, and deceptive pattern mechanism drawing from multiple disciplines.
