Disasters affect not only the physical lives of individuals but also the ways in which they perceive and make sense of the world. How people make meaning of such devastating experiences is crucial for both post-disaster recovery and the development of a disaster culture. This study aims to explore the cognitive, religious, and rational frameworks through which individuals make meaning of their earthquake experiences. The study is based on in-depth interviews conducted with 76 participants living in neighbourhoods and temporary container settlements in Adıyaman. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that earthquake experiences are typically interpreted through the combined use of religious and rational meaning-making frameworks rather than through a single meaning-making framework. These meaning-making processes were analytically classified into three categories: religious, rational, and speculative. The term rational is used as an overarching category encompassing explanations based on natural processes and human factors. Religious meaning-making encompasses themes such as fate, submission, divine trial, and divine punishment; rational meaning-making centres on natural processes and human factors; while speculative meaning-making is organised around conspiracy theories.
The findings further reveal that religious references constitute the dominant pattern of earthquake meaning-making among participants. Within this category, the notions of divine trial and divine punishment are particularly prominent, with the destruction frequently attributed to the deterioration of social values. Some participants, however, interpret the earthquake primarily in terms of fate. Within the rational framework, only a minority explain the earthquake solely through natural processes, whereas the majority focus on human factors such as negligence and irresponsibility that transformed a natural event into a disaster. A small number of participants adopt speculative interpretations by referring to external powers and conspiracy theories. Overall, the findings demonstrate that spiritual beliefs, rational critiques, and, to a lesser extent, speculative interpretations are often intertwined in participants' perceptions of the disaster.
The findings suggest that earthquakes are understood through multiple, overlapping meaning-making frameworks rather than through a single causal perspective. This reflects the complex meaning systems through which individuals interpret disasters, shaped by cultural and religious contexts. In this respect, the study contributes to discussions on the social meaning-making of earthquakes and highlights the importance of incorporating the social context into post-disaster recovery strategies.
