Dating back to early 1980s, and explicitly since the early 1990s, the US Governments have strongly supported Turkish full membership to European Union. Observed in political arenas, this support merits further examination and analysis. Even though Turkish-American relations were sometimes undermined, as in 2003 Iraq War Crisis, strong support Turkish EU accession has remained unwavering. American leverage has been productive for Turkey but also sometimes backfired, as in Copenhagen Summit in 2002. Conventional wisdom of scholars and officials contends that the primary basis of US advocacy is Turkey’s geopolitical importance. But, in view of American Foreign Policy in line with European perception, it can be inferred that there should be additional or more valid reasons which this paper strives to find out.
