The detective novel, a genre closely tied to modernity, offers a space to explore mod- ern society, its individuals, practices, and the discourses surrounding them. The first ex- ample of the genre, which has attracted interest since its inception in Turkish literature, is Ahmet Midhat Efendi’s Esrâr-ı Cinâyât. Focusing on the murders investigated by a per- spicacious Ottoman officer who subscribes to the notion of law, the novel deliberates on the concepts and social concerns that arise as Ottoman society becomes acquainted with modernity. Osman Sabri, the ideal type characterized by rationality and adherence to the law, is in opposition to the criminal, Kalpazan Mustafa, and those who encourage criminal activity. Through this opposition, the moral contradictions produced by modernization are highlighted. By employing intratextual devices such as newspaper reports and letters, the novel not only constructs a communitarian attitude but also highlights the tension and at- tempts at reconciliation within the individual-society-state relationship. The issues surrounding crime in Esrâr-ı Cinâyât extend to the main lines of modernity, including capital, bourgeoisie, and the new society, reason, law, and the public sphere. The present study will analyze the social universe constructed around these concepts specific to modernity in the novel, the issues arising from them, and the author’s attitude towards these issues. The main objective is to demonstrate how this cluster of concepts, which introduces a new ideational sphere to Ottoman society, is articulated through the narrative potential of the detective genre.
Öz Polisiye roman modernite ile sıkı biçimde ilişkilenmiş bir tür olarak modern topluma, insana, ona dair pratiklere ve söylemlere alan açmış bir türdür. Başlangıcından itibaren ilgiyle karşılanan türün Türk edebiyatında ilk örneği Ahmet Midhat Efendi’nin Esrâr-ı Cinâyât adlı eseri olarak kabul edilir. Kanun fikrine bağlı zeki bir Osmanlı zabitinin iz sürdüğü cinayetleri merkezine alan roman Osmanlı toplumunun moderniteye temasıyla karşılaşılacak kavramlar ile sosyal endişeleri tartışır. Osman Sabri karakteriyle rasyonel, çalışkan ve kanun merkezli bir ideal tipin karşısına Kalpazan Mustafa, Hediye Hanım ve Halil Sûrî gibi kahramanlar suçu temsilen yerleşir ve bunların üzerinden modernleşmenin ürettiği ahlaki çelişkiler ve bireyselleşme talepleri açılır. Romanda gazete haberleri, mektuplar ve mahkeme sahneleri gibi metin içi araçlarla kamusal alan ve cemiyetçi bir tavır inşa edilirken, birey-toplum-devlet ilişkisinde ortaya çıkan gerilim ve uzlaşım denemeleri gözlemlenir. Esrâr-ı Cinâyât’ta suçun etrafına kurulan meseleler modernitenin sermaye, burjuva ve yeni toplum, akıl, kanun, kamusal alan gibi ana hatlarına uzanır. Çalışma moderniteye ilişkin bu kavramlar etrafında romanda kurulan sosyal evreni ve beraberinde doğan meseleleri, yazarın bu meselelere yönelik tutumunu ve önerisini irdelemektedir. Osmanlı toplum ve kültürü açısından yeni bir düşünsel ve toplumsal temas alanı oluşturan bu kavram dizisinin, romanda polisiye türünün anlatı olanaklarıyla nasıl ilişkilendiğini ortaya koymak çalışmanın temel hedefidir.
