ABSTRACT
In civil engineering, it is crucial that structures be built on safe soils. However, in many construction projects, it is quite difficult to find soil that naturally has high strength and bearing capacity and for this reason, such soils must be improved. Cement is widely used to improve the properties of soils, but many studies show that cement production generates large amounts of CO2, which causes to global warming. For this reason, in recent years, the potential to replace cement with geopolymers, which are low-cost, provide high strength, require less energy to produce, and generate less CO2, has become increasingly important. In this study, the effect of geopolymers based on waste brick powder (WBP) , activated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na₂SiO₃), on the improvement of the mechanical properties of soils as an alternative to Portland cement (PC) was investigated. In addition, this study investigated the effect of curing time and temperature on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soils treated with geopolymers. In this context, the study utilized silty sand (SM) soil and the molarity (M) of the geopolymers was set to 10, their percentage by weight 15%, and the Na₂SiO₃ (liquid)/NaOH (solid) ratio to 2. Test specimens were prepared by replacing 15% by weight of the silty sand with geopolymer materials containing WBP additives and after these specimens were cured for 7 and 28 days at temperatures of 25 and 60 °C, their strengths were determined in unconfined compression test. The results of experiments showed that the compressive strengths of geopolymer specimens based on waste brick powder were significantly higher than those of the specimens containing by weight 15% Portland cement. This has shown that geopolymer materials based on waste brick powder can be used as replacements instead of cement in soil improvement.
