Currently, motifs and their meanings, which are part of our society, are becoming increasingly unfamiliar to the younger generation. This study aims to address this issue and offers ideas for industrial design education concerning cultural sustainability. Although several studies have examined the use of motifs in furniture design education, research on furniture product collections inspired by cultural motifs is limited. This study pertains to a furniture design project conducted during a third-year studio course of an industrial design department at a Turkish state university. An action research, a qualitative research methodology, was employed in the study. Forty-four industrial design students participated in it. Throughout the course, students created several furniture collections for residences, workplaces, and restaurants, taking inspiration from Anatolian cultural motifs. The observation findings indicate that students primarily focused on the waterway motif and generated mainly coffee table designs in response to the design brief. The predominant manufacturing process used is CNC machining, while wood is the preferred material in the course. Students may have favored the waterway motif because of its flowing and pure structure. Also, students may predominantly choose to develop coffee table designs due to the simplicity of creating them in three dimensions. In addition, students may have chosen CNC machining as the manufacturing method because it is easier to remove undesired pieces from the design after applying motifs to the material. Since wood is warmer, easier to work with, and more environmentally friendly than plastic, it may have been selected primarily for the students' projects. In future studies, it is intended to ask participating students questions regarding these hypotheses. Moreover, further research might examine the design abilities that students develop and the knowledge they gain from this Project.
