Abstract

In this study, tribological performance of 2 μm thick ZrN and Zr(21% Hf)N coatings, deposited on hardened AISI D2 cold work tool steel by Physical Vapour Deposition technique were compared. Alloying of ZrN with Hf did not cause significant hardness increase, whilst increased the mean surface roughness. According to the results of reciprocating wear tests carried out by utilising ceramic (Al2O3) and steel (AISI 52100) balls, the wear resistance of the ZrN coating increases with the addition of Hf.
