Educational activities that are
taught at schools are compiled with the combination of many components. One of
the components of educational activities is textbooks. Although textbooks are
defined as supportive educational material for the courses, in fact textbooks
play an important role in learning-teaching activities. This study examines the
comparison of social studies textbooks studied at the schools of Turkey and
Iran, two countries which are situated in the same geography and which have
always been in cultural, political, economic and security interactions with
each other thanks to the geographic and historical factors, in terms of design.
The study was carried out with the descriptive analysis through document
analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. 2019 -2020 academic year 7th
grade Social Studies textbooks taught in Turkey and Iran constitute the working
group's research. The data found in the 7th grade textbooks of both countries
were analyzed using the “Visual Design Principles” scale. The scale has 3
different categorization formats consisting of inadequate, appropriate and
quite appropriate. The data of the study was collected under 5 heading which
were design of visual items, page design, text design, cover design and
structure features. The results have shown that the Turkish textbooks were
better than Iranian textbooks in terms of design of visual items, page design,
text design and cover design, whereas they were equal in terms of structure
features. The study also outlined that the Turkish textbooks got yearly better
