In the present study, the production of aluminum matrix composite by the direct conversion of 6082 Al alloy machining chips with fly ash is investigated. Characterization of the composites was made by structural examinations and mechanical tests (hardness and dry sliding wear tests). The results show that addition of the fly ash increased considerably the hardness but reduced the wear resistance. When compared to conventionally produced 6082 Al alloy, 6082 Al alloy produced from chips by direct conversion method exhibited superior wear resistance.
