Mustafa Talha Akkiraz was born in Germany and raised in Istanbul. He studied classical Islamic Madrasah disciplines before entering university. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Marmara University Faculty of Theology and is a doctoral researcher in the fields Qur’anic Studies and the History of Tafsir. His MA thesis titled Talkhīṣ as a Writing Method in Ottoman Tafsir received a MİO Award in the Turkiye Theology Thesis Competition.

His research focuses on Qurʾanic studies, history and literature of tafsir, the classical tafsir book writing culture, the historical development of tafsir writing styles with particular emphasis on the techniques of abridgment (ikhtisār) and summarisation (talkhīṣ). Currently in the sixth year of his PhD, he is examining the historical influence of al-Kashshāf and the central role of its mukhtasar (abridged) versions in the tafsīr tradition.

Akkiraz, began his academic career in 2017 as a Research Assistant at Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University and continued in the same position at Marmara University Faculty of Theology between 2019 and 2023. He has also participated in various educational and research projects at the TDV Centre for Islamic Studies (İSAM), where he completed certificate programs and assumed several responsibilities, including conducting LADEP Tafsīr I–II seminars (2018–2023), AYP Research Fellow (2018–2020), and working as secretary of the Tafsīr Committee for the second edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam (2020–2023).

He is currently (2023–2025) continues his research at the University of Toronto as a TUBITAK International Research Fellow, from his post at Bilecik Seyh Edebali University Faculty of Theology.
